You must have a space to work on your music. This would preferably be its own room where you could shut yourself off from the rest of the world. I have a separate music room at my house and it has been a great thing for me. It is very helpful to return to the same space every day and get some work done. There’s something about returning to the same environment that gets my brain ready to work, gets me in the right frame of mind to accomplish some things.

I also have all my tools nearby and “at the ready.” Notebook, metronome, recorder, iPad, etc…  I don’t have to go looking for these things every time I practice because they are always in the same place when I need them.

When I start practicing, I often notice that I think of things I need to do-some music related and some not. Usually business stuff.  I keep a notebook open on my iPad and I make quick notes on what has popped into my mind so that I can address these things later, AFTER I’m done practicing.  This let’s me continue to focus on my music and allows me to deal with other things later. Don’t lose your focus!
It takes a lot of discipline to say no to all your devices, (and family and friends!
?).   Locking yourself in a room will help with all of this. I’d also suggest telling your family, roommates, etc, that you’re going to be unreachable for the next chunk of time (30 minutes, 1 hour, whatever you’re plan is) and to please not disturb you unless it’s an emergency.
