Hi folks, I’m Rod. I hope 2025 finds you hopeful for the future. I’ve played several instruments for decades but am relatively new to dobro, and through a circumstance it has gotten my attention to really develop skills in it. I currently have a ROUNDNECK Gretsch Boxcar I recorded this song with which gives an idea of the style I personally enjoy:
But I really want to try heavier strings that a roundneck won’t handle. So I’m wanting a nice warm square neck, and prefer the warmer wood body sound vs the metallic. Again I don’t know my way around this field that well, so I’m looking at something like a Regal or Paul Beard – something around the $800 to $1300 budget range and am happy to do used equipment. Can you provide some suggestions that fit these qualifications? Greatly appreciated, and thanks for your time.

Hi Rod, great question! I used to have a Wechter/Scheerhorn Signature Model with Abe Wechter and Tim Scheerhorn and I thought it was the best sounding guitar in your price range. I just heard someone playing one recently and it sounded great. So you might look for a used Wechter/Scheerhorn.
Regals are okay, but might not give you the tonal quality you’re looking for. Beards are great also.
I love Byrl Murdoch’s guitars and have a signature model with him currently. They might be out of your price range, but here’s a link in case you want to check them out-
