Does anyone have any tips on triplet licks? I usually use the triplets with a hammer-on on the third fret, if that makes sense, and move it up the strings. I like to hear other ideas though. I really like the way Josh Swift does it, although I can’t do that very fast… And opinions would be great!

Hey Luke, I saw your recent post at AW 😉
I think using of the thumb and the hammer-ons is the best way, the only problem for me is the speed ))) When I comparied the different techniques of Rob, Andy, Jerry and Troy, it surprised me – each of them plays with a different approach, but still at the speed of light! Especially Rob and Jerry – they use thumb so much.

So, the most effective picking to me is:

Thanks for your detailed reply. Yep, I posted on AW and I’ve been working on Troy’s triplets for about a year now, so I’m pretty comfortable playing that. Appreciate the tab as well. Will definitely work on that!

I’ve also noticed that using the thumb gives its that extra power behind the pickin. I’ve been experimenting alot with different licks/phrasing substituting a thumb pick intstead of finger. I definitely hear alot more thumb picking on high strings in modern players.

For sure. In fact, a lot of my first string picking includes the thumb. Quite different from the banjo 🙂

Actually I first saw the ‘Thumb-Index’ picking on the old Cindy Cashdollar lap steel DVD. It surprised me how it increased my picking speed in a week =) And the Andy’s advise is the best IMHO – do what works best for you! Jerry picks so many notes with just a thumb – it seems strange and it’s hard to play like that, but it WORKS for him! 😉
